NORWOOD – Public Health Director Stacey Lane and Project Director Francesca Golightly are pleased to share information on the ongoing Mental Health in Norwood Matters campaign.
The social marketing campaign launched in June and will continue throughout the remainder of the year. The campaign aims to raise awareness of mental health and increase knowledge of mental illness to begin the important work of removing the negative stigma associated with seeking mental health care.
The campaign will also share resources that are available to Norwood residents with a mental illness, families of those with a mental illness and the general public. Information shared thus far includes the importance of mental health, what affects mental health, how to care for mental health, common mental illnesses, and how mental illness varies from person to person.
Through the use of public service announcements, billboards, newsletters, blog posts and more the campaign will disseminate information and educational materials with an overall goal of increasing residents’ knowledge of the importance of mental health and available mental health resources.
The campaign is part of the work the Norwood Health Department is doing through the Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which was received in September 2021. The goal of the grant is to train Town of Norwood employees, Norwood Public Schools staff and Primary Care Physicians in Mental Health First Aid. More information on the grant can be found here.
Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course offered by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing that teaches participants about mental health, the impact of early intervention, how to recognize early signs and worsening signs of a mental health challenge, how to identify signs of a mental health crisis and how to employ de-escalation techniques when needed. MHFA training will build the Town’s capacity to understand and respond to the needs of residents and students.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has taken an unprecedented toll on mental health over the past two years, and we are very fortunate to have received the MHAT grant to begin building the capacity to address the mental health needs in our community,” Golightly said. “We hope that this campaign will help residents understand the importance of taking care of their mental health and what resources are available to them.”
This year’s State of the Union address by President Joe Biden represented the most consequential remarks from the White House on mental health and substance use in decades demonstrating the importance of addressing the mental health crisis.
Similarly, the United States Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy issued an important public health advisory regarding the emerging mental health crisis confronting youth and adults. Data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness states one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year and one in six youth in the U.S. aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
