Many business outlets and supermarkets across the UK are closed today (Monday, September 19, 2022) as the day has been declared a national bank holiday to honour the Queen‘s state funeral.
The bank holiday on September 19 will be stricter than many but will any gyms or fitness centres open and, if so, which hours?
We take a look at whether you can still enjoy your daily workout.
Some gyms will be open but on restricted hours. There is no official guideline on the closure of gyms for Bank Holiday Monday, September 19 and many major gym centres have announced they will close to mourn the monarch’s passing.
UK-based health club Bannatyne’s announced all its health clubs, spas and head office would remain closed on Monday, September 19.
An official statement read: “[Owner] Duncan Bannatyne and everyone at The Bannatyne Group are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Her decades of selfless service to her people, her country and the Commonwealth are unsurpassed, and she will be greatly missed.
“As a mark of respect, and so all of our staff can witness this moment of history, all our health clubs and spas and our head office will be closed on Monday, September 19. We will reopen as normal on Tuesday, September 20.”
Pure Gym has announced it will open sites today but for restricted hours only. The statement on Twitter announced gyms would close between 10am and 2pm on Monday, September 19 so “our colleagues can pay their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II”. The company said opening hours would return to normal from Tuesday, September 20.

Other gyms that will be closed for the day today include Everyone Active, Third Space clubs, and Total Fitness.
UK Active, which represents about 4,000 organisations in the fitness industry including gyms, leisure centres and other sports bodies, stated closure times would be a “personal matter”.
UK Active chief executive Huw Edwards said: “Marking Her Majesty’s funeral is a very personal matter and each of our members will be making plans that suit their customers, staff, and local communities best.”
Supermarkets such as Tesco (except small Express stores), Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl will close their UK sites on Monday to pay respect to the Queen.
Other operators such as Asda will open at 5pm but all online deliveries will be suspended for the day.
McDonald’s will keep its restaurants closed today until 5pm.
KFC has said most of its restaurants will be closed during the Queen’s funeral. However, to ease pressure on public services, restaurants in key places might remain open.
The funeral service for the Queen commenced at 11am BST/ 3am PST/ 6am EST.
Following the funeral service, the sovereign will be taken to be buried in the King George VI memorial chapel in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. She will be lain to rest beside her husband.
