Outdoor fitness court opens at Kalamazoo park
KALAMAZOO, MI — A new outdoor fitness court is now open in Kalamazoo.
The fitness court was installed at Upjohn Park, 1000 Walter St., in the first week of October.
The new fitness court is designed as an open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Created with adults of all ages in mind, people can use the court for all fitness levels, the city said in an announcement of the opening on Facebook.
The court can also be used in group or solo settings with local volunteer ambassadors leading classes for groups. Users can also download the free Fitness Court App — a coach-in-your-pocket style platform — that transforms the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness ecosystem. The Fitness Court App is available for iOS and Android, the city said.
The city of Kalamazoo will celebrate the new park amenity opening at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. All community members are welcome and no RSVP is necessary for the event, the city said.
Members of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety will also be on hand to do a fitness court demonstration, including Interim Chief Dave Boysen.

The city of Kalamazoo plans to celebrate the grand opening Wednesday in collaboration with Priority Health and the National Fitness Campaign, as part of a national movement to make world-class fitness free and accessible in public spaces across the country.
The Kalamazoo City Commission accepted a $50,000 grant earlier this year to support the project.
The grant was combined with $92,350 in Community Development Block Grant funding to support the installation to support the health and recreation needs of residents in the Edison Neighborhood and across the city, states a recommendation to the city commission.
A portion of the cost is sponsored by Priority Health, which will have its logo on the pad, the city said.
“We’re excited to bring our campaign to make world-class fitness free to the city of Kalamazoo,” Mitch Menaged, founder of National Fitness Campaign, told MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette previously. “Together with the city and Priority Health, NFC is happy to be part of a wellness network growing across the nation.”
The city said the installation of the fitness pad aligns with goals in the Imagine Kalamazoo 2025 master plan for Kalamazoo, as well as goals for increased recreation and amenities in the Edison Neighborhood Plan.
The location is less than a half mile from the Kalamazoo Farmers Market site, and near the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.
