After the announcement that he will return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, actor Hugh Jackman hits the gym to get into superhero shape once again.
Actor Hugh Jackman is returning to play Wolverine in Deadpool 3, and the X-Men star has already started to get back into superhero shape.
On Instagram (via The Direct), Jackman shared a photo of himself drenched in sweat while flexing his biceps, the accompanying message reading, "Work in progress." The actor also posted a reel featuring the image, two other workout photos and C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" playing, along with the caption, "And so it begins…" The actor's training kicks off as the third Deadpool film is slated to release in Fall 2024.
On Sep. 27, 2022, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds broke the bombshell news that Jackman is returning as Wolverine with a video titled "Deadpool Update." In the video, after bringing up how Deadpool 3 was absent from Disney's D23 Expo and Marvel Studios' presentation of upcoming projects, Reynolds claims to have no ideas for what the next sequel will be about. The actor then says, "But we did have one idea," as Jackman walks by in the background, Reynolds continuing, "Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?" Jackman simply responds, "Yeah, sure, Ryan."
The video then reveals Deadpool 3's release date and a new logo showing the Deadpool icon scratched by Wolverine's claws. Reynolds later posted another video sitting on a couch with Jackman, where the two discuss the film and tease its violence, all while their voices are drowned out by Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." As Deadpool fans may recall, Wham!'s music is referenced throughout the first 2016 film, the movie including "Careless Whisper" as its final track before the credits roll.
Reynolds' Deadpool and Jackman's Wolverine interacting in live-action — outside 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine — is something fans and Reynolds himself have wanted for a long time. Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy, who worked with Reynolds both on Free Guy (2021) and The Adam Project (2022), said back in March 2022, "I'm not going to say where and how, but I absolutely will confirm my intention and determination to be the lucky son of a ***** who puts those two magnificent gods in the same movie together," referring to Reynolds and Jackman. Six months later and that statement has become a reality.
Though Deadpool 3 now falls under Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, it was not listed when the studio announced its Phase 5 and Phase 6 projects at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. As of writing, the project's release date sees the film coming out in theaters between the end of Phase 5 with The Thunderbolts in July 2024, and before the start of Phase 6 with Fantastic Four in Nov. 2024.
Deadpool 3 debuts in theaters on Sep. 4, 2024.
